My Process
This is the process I took to curate a book series for Barnes and Noble Classics and design their book jackets. I chose to target younger professionals practicing conscious consumerism by creating a series of exclusivity and self-identification.
1. Explore
Inspiration can come from anywhere so I try to pay attention and seek new experiences. Listening to a new song about anti-consumerism interested me and I wanted to learn more about how young people spend their money.
2. Research
Conducting research is one of my favorite parts of the design process. I narrowed down my target audience to young professional consumers. I read online psychological studies about how this demographic defines authenticity and the role that identity plays in buying patterns.
3.Sketch
Using what I learned about the audience and the market for book series, I started creating layouts for the information on the book covers.
4. Build
I decided to recreate photos from emerging photographers that represented a series of books about common identities that young people define themselves by in today’s culture.
5. Share
I showed people my work and got feedback about my copy and how my design was communicating. I encouraged people to describe their initial reactions and try to guess who the audience was without giving them direction.
6. Refine
Taking the feedback I got from sharing my work, I changed the copy to a more approachable tone and increased the type weight for greater legibility along the spine of the book.
